Joe sent these pictures in of the top quality roofing components that we use at H & B. He had this to say,” Please note photo showing disintegrating rubber pipe jack & plastic vents. You would be surprised as to the high percentage of ‘roofers’ who use these!” and “We use metal vents. The plastic ones warp & crack over time. In the valleys we put Ice & Water shield and a 24” wide metal valley. Most weave the shingles in a ‘one-cut’ or a ‘California’ valley. Most importantly most roofers use cheap neoprene/rubber pipe jacks which are unsightly and do not last! Why put an 18 year part on a 30-40-50 year roof? Most do. We use the 2-pc lead pipe jacks. You should ask these guys why they put inferior parts on a job (they’re cheaper).

We use Certainteed or Malarkey products as a general rule. They have 2 features most brands do not have. An embedded strip of Ice & Water and a stronger construction overall.

The AR or algae block feature wears out in 12 years and also does not work on %65 of the approximately 150 species of moss etc. There is no advantage of using 30lb felt on a 30 yr roof. All it is is a vapor barrier. If you use a 40 or 50 year shingle then we upgrade to a 30lb felt and a lifetime ridge too. You have likely been told about a synthetic underlayment but the only advantage there is to the installer, that’s it.”
